Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is defined as the portion of the stomach located above the diaphragm. Normally the entire stomach is located in the abdominal cavity below the diaphragm. When the hole or ring of the diaphragm is enlarged, part of the stomach slips up into the chest cavity and becomes the hiatal hernia. This condition may be associated with acid reflux (GERD).
